School History

Saint Mary’s Boys National School first opened its doors to its pupils on the 18th of February 1975 on the site of the old St. Mary’s Church dating from 1847. The navy uniform sports a crest depicting the old church with its motto “Vincit Veritas” : Truth Conquers.

The facility was developed on the grounds of the earlier Saint Mary’s Church. Since its establishment, the school and its grounds have undergone extensive developments. The grounds have been landscaped with hedges, shrubbery and trees. This affords the pupils ample opportunity to engage in lessons in the natural environment.

In 1992 an area of land adjoining the school grounds was purchased and developed as an additional recreational and play area. Three new outer resource rooms have also helped to facilitate pupils educational needs.

On 14th of October 1995 there was great excitement in the School and on Church Street with the presentation of the original church bell from the Moloney Family to be displayed in its former location where St. Mary’s Church once occupied the grounds.

"This proud bell derived its name from what was and now is St. Mary's. It was formerly presented in 1914 by Michael Moloney to St. Mary's Church situated on the grounds of our present Scoile Mhuire. It was graciously donated to St. Mary's Boys School by Mary Moloney and returned to its rightful birthplace."

On this day a special mass ceremony was attended by hundreds of parishioners, as the towering bell was unveiled.

This new landmark revives a period that many of our local people can relate to in their younger years and now sounds remembrance each time the bell is tolled.
